Governors

The school Governing Body is made up of trustees from a variety of backgrounds, these include the Head Teacher, some parents, members of the local community, staff trustees and trustees appointed by the LEA. These trustees help the Head Teacher and the staff to run the school, with the primary aim of raising standards and promoting effective teaching and learning throughout the school.

The key areas of concern for the governing body are the people in the school, the school environment, the curriculum and the finances of the school. In order to look after these areas appropriately the governing body has two committees each with their own areas to address. The two committees are the staffing finance and premises committee and the curriculum committee. These committees meet every half term and report to the main governing body, which also meets every half term.

The Teaching and Achievement Committee deals with the implementation of the National Curriculum and the Foundation Stage Profile, this committee also reviews school policies.

The Staffing Finance and Premises Committee deals with all areas of the school relating to people. These include staffing, pupils, health and safety, budget and safeguarding.

All members and trustees are appointed by the governing body.

Trustees are appointed on a four-yearly basis. Nobody at Stanwix School is paid more than £100,000.

Chair of Governors

I have been involved with Stanwix school for over 35 years as my children went to Stanwix and I have been involved in with the then PTA and now as a Governor of the school and I am very happy and proud to be part of this fine school for so long. I am a Carlisle City and Cumbria County Council Councillor for Stanwix. I was one of the founding members of Stanwix Community Centre and am still on the Board. At the moment I am a Cabinet Member for Communities, Health and Wellbeing at the City Council having been a past Mayor of Carlisle and last year I was chairman of Cumbria County Council. I believe in a strong local community and our school is the centre of this strong and local community.

I am a solicitor at a local firm and have been a Parent Governor at Stanwix School since 2016. I have two sons, the eldest has just started secondary school and the youngest still attends Stanwix. I enjoy walking in the Lakes with my family in the summer and going skiing with them in the winter.

I am married to Joanne and have a great son called Harry who is 5 and goes to Stanwix School. I used to be in the police for 30 years until I recently retired. I love family time, holidays and keeping fit. I am looking forward to helping in the role of a governor.

I have been a headteacher at Stanwix School for 7 years, previous to that I was headteacher of a small school in the west. My role involves working with the governing body in deciding on the strategic direction of our school. The governors visit school on a regular basis to work alongside staff and children in the classrooms and to support me in my role as headteacher.

I was invited to become a governor in September 2016 and was appointed chair of the Finance, Staffing and Premises Committee in September 2018. As a parent to two children at Stanwix, I really value the opportunity to give something back to the school. I enjoy being part of a team that both challenges and supports the school to enable all pupils to achieve their full potential.
